The Department of Nephrology, Transplantation and Hemodialysis

Patients in the dialysis state program receive scheduled treatment in the department.

Sessions of hemodialysis are conducted in three shifts every day. Conditions for performing emergency hemodialysis are also met in the Department of Intensive Care and Emergency.  Said services are exclusive in Tbilisi and available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

What is dialysis?

Dialysis (artificial kidney) is cleaning the blood with a semi-permeable membrane. When kidneys do not function properly, dialysis is necessary to artificially remove excess waste and fluids as a result of metabolism. It’s performed during acute and chronic kidney failure. The procedure lasts 4 hours on average and is completely pain-free.

Dialysis is a vital procedure during renal pathology, because without so-called artificial kidney, uremic toxins will accumulate in the organism and poison the body.

The blood is cleaned extracorporeally, i.e., outside the body in hemodialysis.

Peritoneal is performed intracorporeally, i.e., inside the body – uremic toxins and excess fluids are transported from the blood through peritoneum of the abdomen, and the procedure is permitted to conduct at home.

Complications of dialysis

Maintaining thorough hygiene and following your doctor’s recommendations are essential in the procedure.

The most severe complications (albeit, all of this is controlled and rarely detected) that can be caused by dialysis:

  • Headache;
  • Vomiting;
  • Convulsion of extremities;
  • A sharp decrease in blood pressure, arterial hypotension.

In case of what type of pathologies dialysis is not conducted?

Absolute contraindications:

  • Acute bleeding;
  • Hemorrhagic stroke;
  • Terminal condition of a patient.

Symptoms of kidney diseases

The methods in diagnosing renal pathology are the general urine analysis, ultrasound and laboratory tests.

Following symptoms should be paid attention to:

  • Reduced diuresis (decrease in urine);
  • Dark urine;
  • Swelling of facial area and extremities;
  • High arterial pressure (hypertension)
  • High level of protein and erythrocyte in the blood;
  • Joint pain;
  • Pain in the lumbar region.

In case of those symptoms, patient should contact National Center of Surgery and consult with a nephrologist. In the clinic, experienced nephrologists care for patients' health.

Nephrological diseases

A kidney is vital for humans. It’s a complex web of blood vessels and tubes that removes waste and excess water from the blood. The kidney regulates the balance of fluids, electrolytes, and acid-alkaline in the organism.

Nephrological diseases include:

  1. Renal vascular diseases;
  2. Kidney failure;
  3. Kidney infection;
  4. Kidney injury caused by toxins and medications;
  5. Nephritic and nephrotic syndrome, etc..

Highly qualified nephrologists of the clinic treat kidney diseases under outpatient as well as inpatient conditions

Kidney transplantation

In transplantation, damaged kidney is replaced with healthy kidney transplanted from other human's (deceased or living) organism.

A living donor can be a genetic relative, spouse, a close relative of a spouse or a person who’s in the donor exchange program.

Overall, around 40 successful kidney transplant operations have been conducted in National Center of Surgery.

For the past 20 years, the department has constantly been developing and growing. The team of professionals from the department with rich history has many grateful patients. Thanks to them, numerous people were saved from death.
