Nephrology, Hemodialysis and Transplantation Department of the National Center of Surgery is celebrating 20 years since its establishment

In the field of transplantation, the National Center for Surgery has great traditions!!!

In 1977 under the supervision of Valeri Shumakov and Laur Managadze 4 renal transplantations from a deceased-donor were being performed in our clinic.
The department of nephrology, hemodialysis and transplantation, which is functioning in The National Center of Surgery, is 20 years old. 20 years ago, in 1997, the kidney transplant surgery was performed from a living donor (a relative) in our clinic, this date coincides with the anniversary date. In total, 40 successful kidney transplant surgeries have been performed in the National Center of Surgery.
The department was established by Dr. Elguja Ghonghadze, pioneer of kidney transplantation in Georgia, who was first to perform 4 kidney transplantation surgeries from a living donor for the first time in Georgia in 1995.
In 2014, by the decision of the founder of the clinic, the department was named after Dr. Elguja Ghonghadze.

The National Center of Surgery has been visited by a number of well-known foreign experts who have been working in the field of transplantation for years and have worked with our doctors, including well know French professors Jacques Dantal and Georges Karam, the professor of Shumakov's Transplantation Center, Transplantologist Ian Maysyuk.
