Positron-Emission Computed Tomography is a research method of nuclear medicine, which is a recognized gold standard in the early diagnosis and management of onco diseases!

Philips Vereos Digital PET/CT is the world's first and only fully Digital Positron-Emission Computed Tomography. The advantages of this device allow us, to detect millimeter-sized tumor formations, which helps the physician to detect cancer at an early stage and to guide treatment tactics properly.

What is PET/CT?

This is a hybrid research method of nuclear medicine, which combines Positron-Emission and the Computed Tomography. Summarizing their data reveals the exact localization and metabolism of the tumor formation. Compared to healthy tissues, tumor cells are characterized by enhanced glucose metabolism, metabolic changes, however, always precede anatomical ones. That is why this method of research makes it possible to diagnose oncological diseases at an early stage.

How is the research conducted?

The study is performed with a radioactive isotope (FDG – fluorine18 fluoro-deoxy-glucose). The patient receives this isotope intravenously, through a catheter, its dose is only diagnostic and has no side effects. Digital Positron-Emission Computed Tomography records isotope distribution in the body. Most importantly, the patient receives only the slightest radiation load during the research process. It is necessary to delay the patient for one hour from the injection to the shooting. The maximum time for examining the whole body is 20 minutes.

Advantages of the Digital PET/CT from the National Center of Surgery compared to „analog“ devices

  • Has photon digital counting technology. Registers all the unique photons that exist as a result of isotope decay in the cell;
  • High image quality at the expense of increased sensitivity;Detects even the smallest tumor foci, that do not exceed 2-3 mm;
  • Allows us to accurately describe the formation;
  • Consumes a lower dose of the isotope, therefore, Digital PET/CT is less sensitive to its half-disintegration period and the patient receives less radiation;
  • The study is conducted in a minimum amount of time for the patient.
