44 years old patient was admitted to National Center of Surgery’s clinic “New Life”.
In the framework of the clinic's promotion, the patient had an abdominal computed tomography under outpatient condition using ultramodern, 160-slice computed tomography scanner Toshiba Aquilion Lightning SP.
The patient constantly suffered from the pain in the right iliac fossa, also a dull pain and discomfort around the navel area and in the lumbar region.
As a radiologist of the clinic "New Life", Giorgi Pipia stated in an interview with us, patient’s anamnesis had no record of operative intervention or gunshot wound.
It’s worth mentioning that our clinic's 160-slice computed tomography allows us to examine an object in detail with a 3D imaging regime.
According to the radiologist’s explanation, a foreign object resembling a screw was detected on the right side, adjacent to the psoas muscle and along the small intestine.
After the consultation with surgeon Jaba Babaevi - the clinic's head of the surgery department, an operative intervention was planned.
Mr. Jaba states – “The image showed partial bowel obstruction. After the preoperative preparation, the patient was moved to the operating room, where we started the surgery using a laparoscopic method. In the mentioned area, greater omentum adhered to the front of the abdominal wall, where the loop of the small intestine was incarcerated causing bowel obstruction. The computed tomography detected a high-density object in the greater omentum. We released the loop of small intestine preventing the adhesion. The walls were inflammatory, albeit organ integrity wasn’t damaged. In one area, we put on a Z-shape suture where the patient had a fibrinous pellicle. The aforesaid metal was removed together with omentum. The operation proceeded without complications.”
It’s worth mentioning that the patient was discharged with a satisfactory health condition in 3 days.
If not for the timely response of our radiologist and surgeon, the foreign object would damage the integrity of other organs and cause the peritonitis development.
