Patients injured from New Year’s pyrotechnics needed a reconstructive surgery

More than 20 patients were treated at National Center of Surgery because of improper use of pyrotechnics on New Year's eve and the following days.

11 patients were admitted with severe injuries, whereas the rest presented with superficial injuries and burns.

The majority of injured people are aged above 30.

“ 11 patients were admitted with finger amputation – all of them underwent reconstructive surgery;  in 5 cases, replantation was required. It’s worth mentioning that the function of the hand cannot be restored to its' primary state, i.e., a state before the injury due to such trauma when large tissue structure is torn and damaged from explosive materials. For the reader to comprehend the scale of injury we’re dealing with, I'll say that waves of the explosion blasted some parts of the hand into the air or disintegrated them into molecules. With the help of modern medicine and our specialist, we restored all tissues and discharged patients with their own hands. It’s a remarkable victory, but I will explain it one more time and say that their hand will never be the same as it was before the trauma and moreover, this result would be unimaginable 15-20 years ago – Such damages were only subjected to amputation. In an explosion, we get many torn, battered and crushed tissues. Every patient made a primary mistake, particularly, held pyrotechnics in their hands, which is not recommended. New Year’s pyrotechnics should be buried in the ground or fixed in a vertical position, it cannot be managed manually. Old New Year is approaching and I ask all readers to keep in mind the instructions and remember that total explosive power in the paper tube doesn’t fall behind the grenade. We also treated a patient who bought expensive pyrotechnics in a specialized store. What I’m trying to say that quality and price don't make a substantial difference.

All injured patients from New Year’s pyrotechnics are already discharged from the clinic.

It’s worth mentioning that damage caused by pyrotechnics is considered to be the most severe mechanical trauma because tissues surrounding the wound are battered and might become completely dead because of a strong wave of the explosion. Because of a large portion of dead tissues, replacement or restoration requires numerous operations and often, long term rehabilitation processes. Improper use of pyrotechnics damages muscles, as well as bones.

Please, keep children away from pyrotechnics and follow all recommendations.

Remotely light up New Year’s pyrotechnics, because holding it in your hand is a risk.

Wish you health!
