What is a colonoscopy and what organs are examined?
Colonoscopy - is an endoscopic examination performed with a special instrument - a colonoscope, through which the walls (mucosa) of the colon and distal part of the ileum are examined.
When do we need a colonoscopy and how often?
- Colonoscopy is used to detect polyps in the large intestine and remove them;
- When there is suspicion of intestinal diseases (abdominal pain, nausea, rapid weight loss, unexplained increase in body temperature, pus and mucus in the stool);
- If the stool test for occult blood is positive;
- Increased specific tumor markers;
- Unsuccessful treatment of anemia;
- Swallowing a foreign body;
- If close relatives have had colon polyps or cancer;
- Control of previous treatment;
- If you have no complaints, you should have it done at least once after the age of 40 for preventive purposes due to the rejuvenation of oncology! Remember, there are no pain nerve endings in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract! You could have colon polyps and not know it! Colonoscopy removes polyps before they turn into cancer!
Are there any contraindications?
- Acute infectious diseases;
- Acute cardiovascular diseases;
- Peritonitis;
- Acute ulcerative colitis;
- The final decision to perform a colonoscopy is made by the endoscopist after examining the patient!
How do we prepare and how many days in advance?
- The patient takes laxatives the day before the examination and adheres to a restricted diet for three days prior to the examination.
- The diet and laxatives are prescribed by the endoscopist after a personal interview with the patient!
Is a colonoscopy performed with anesthesia?
The examination is performed both with and without anesthesia. This is usually chosen by the patient. The examination lasts an average of 20 minutes and is usually completely painless and safe. However, there are situations when it is preferable to perform the examination under anesthesia: Open surgeries on abdominal organs, pain in the anus, abdominal pain, mental state, and more.
