For the first time in Georgia! Interventional cardiologist removed large thrombus from pulmonary artery

For the first time in Georgia, amid acute pulmonary embolism thrombus was removed from blocked blood vessel with a vascular approach (endovascular) in National Center of Surgery.

What is acute pulmonary embolism?

Acute pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening condition and, according to official statistics, is characterized by 65% mortality. The cause of thrombosis is deep vein thrombosis in the lower limbs, i.e. Thrombus from deep vein travels through heart and to the pulmonary artery blocking it and, subsequently, causing acute shortage of breath.

85 years old patient was admitted in National Center of Surgery by emergency team.

The patient had difficulty breathing, shortness of breath. Shortly after arrival, it was necessary to start artificial respiration. The condition was critical. In the emergency department, the patient underwent a chest computed tomography angiography that confirmed pulmonary embolism suspicions.

The patient’s severe health condition needed immediate intervention, thrombus aspiration from pulmonary artery.

Thrombus aspiration (thrombus removal) from pulmonary artery

Following the puncture of femoral vein, with angiographic control, the catheter was inserted from femoral vein and through heart into corresponding point of pulmonary arteries. Afterwards, simultaneous to thrombus dismantling and fragmenting, the masses were removed and the blood vessel was freed from clots.

As Interventional cardiologist Zurab Leladze, head of cardio interventional department at the National Center of Surgery,
stated in an interview with us, thrombus was so large that it couldn’t pass though aspiration catheter without any hindrance and would stuck in certain places due to its massive volume.

Mr. Leladze stated - "An operation was performed that implies an endovascular removal of blood clot i.e. removing thrombus from pulmonary artery with only one prick. The operation was carried out with the control of region’s exclusive, ultramodern angiographer Trinias B12. The operation lasted for 1.5 hours and the intervention proceeded without any complications. The patient continues to be treated in an intensive care unit”

How’s patient’s health condition post-surgery?

As a result of surgery, the blood vessel was opened to its maximum, the blood circulation in pulmonary artery was restored, and, subsequently, the patient's general health condition improved. On the second day after intervention, mechanical ventilation was removed and patient’s breathing parameters, as well as cardio-echoscopic data improved
