What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the outer layer of the eye, causing redness and discomfort.

The symptoms and causes of conjunctivitis

Redness of the eye, blood vessel enlargement, burning, and the sensation of a foreign body are the hallmarks of conjunctivitis. Depending on the causes, there are a number of types:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis: This is the most common form. It can be caused by dust, makeup, or a foreign object in the eye. The eyelids are glued together in the morning, and a whitish-yellow discharge frequently emerges during this time. Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory medications are used as treatment.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis: Common in spring, during flowering. Its symptoms are severe itching and redness. It is caused by plants, household chemicals, or aerosols. Treatment includes antiallergic drops.
  • Viral conjunctivitis: The most dangerous type, causing severe pain, sensitivity to light, redness, and blurred vision. Its treatment requires antiviral medications.

Wearing contact lenses during conjunctivitis

Wearing contact lenses is not recommended for any form of conjunctivitis. This can cause irreversible damage to the cornea. Lenses should be removed before going to bed to avoid complications.

Modern treatment and prevention of conjunctivitis

To prevent conjunctivitis, it is important to protect the eyes from dust, use regular moisturizing drops, and wear protective glasses when working with chemical agents or outdoors.
