If the air conditioner is still on when you sleep

If the air conditioner is still on when you sleep

We cannot imagine summer without the air conditioner.

Is the air conditioner bad for health? Many people are interested in this issue and especially those who have a child at home.

Is the air conditioner safe for our health and what should we consider to maximally benefit from it?

National Center of Surgery, multi-field department’s therapist Elene Zhorzholiani discusses the topic.

If you use air-conditioner, keep in mind the following:

  • It’s not recommended to be in a cold and dry room for a long time;
  • Better use the air conditioner only during the time of the day when the temperature on the street is especially high;
  • It’s not desirable to use the air conditioner during the sleep, as the risk of catching cold increases;
  • The direct impact of the cold air coming from the air conditioner causes the cold. Modern so-called Split-Systems can solve this problem. There is a risk of developing pneumonia caused by Legionella;
  • Do not sit with your back to the air conditioner, make sure that the airflow is directed upwards and it’s not directed at you;
  • The allergic background should be considered as well. Keep in mind that the air conditioner filter attracts dust particles on which bacteria and microbes are located;
  • It doesn’t matter who the conditioner cools down, an adult or a child, make sure the room has an optimal temperature;
  • Often air the room and remember, if all conditions are met the air condition doesn’t harm the immunity of the child;
  • If a person has a serious problem with the vocal cords, the air conditioner will naturally have an influence. 2 factors should be taken into account – sharp changes in humidity and temperature lower than necessary. Do not stand/sit near the air conditioner, it's not recommended to have the air conditioner on all day long;
  • The organism of each person is an individual. People who have done tonsillectomy should be more attentive. If possible, we advise you to cool down the room first and enter the room when you turn off the air conditioner.
