During pregnancy blood pressure changes are frequent and correct measurement of blood pressure is extremely important.
National Center of Surgery „New Life“ clinic’s obstetrician-gynecologist Ketevan Iordanishvili discusses the topic.
Ms. Iordanishvili states - "Pregnant women’s blood pressure should be taken in a seated position, elbow and arm bone should form a 45-degree angle. The pressure is measured twice with a 10 min interval at a heart level and on both hands. Highest number is considered the correct one. Pregnant woman should be well-rested. It’s not possible to measure the blood pressure after walking up the stairs, running, eating or under stressful situations“
In addition, arterial pressure is measured on every antenatal visit when pregnancy proceeds physiologically
If the pregnant woman has particular complaints, pressure control is recommended. for example:
- Headache
- Weakness
- DIzziness and etc.
If pregnant women’s hypertension is confirmed, it’s necessary to control arterial pressure in mornings and evenings.
As Ms.Iordanishvili stated in an interview with us, high blood pressure during pregnancy is considered to be – 140/100 mm/hg and more.
When arterial pressure is low during pregnancy
Low pressure is often the result of changes in pregnant women’s bodies and to a certain extent belongs to physiology of pregnancy.
After getting pregnant, blood flow increases in a lesser pelvic cavity in order to provide adequate nutrition for the uterus. In addition, the amount of circulating blood increases, which causes the heart to work intensely. It’s possible for a heart not to endure this load and deteriorate blood pressure. Blood pressure of 90-60 mm/hg is still considered normal. If the pressure indicator has dropped below this number, we already have hypotension at our hands.
